Mark Goulas, MD

Founded the practice in Bluffton in 2006 and has performed more than 15,000 cataract surgeries. Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Mark Goulas is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specialises in cataract and refractive surgery, and the founder of this practice.

He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, earned a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University, and graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit in 2000. He completed his internship at Oakwood Hospital in Michigan, where he served as Chief Resident, and his ophthalmology training at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas — where he developed the clinical and surgical foundation he still operates on today. He has co-authored several research projects, ranging from lasers used in glaucoma to new surgical techniques in paediatrics.

After completing his training in 2004, Dr. Goulas joined a busy ophthalmology practice in Florence, South Carolina, refining his work as a physician and surgeon. He founded Low Country Eye Associates in Bluffton in January 2006.

Dr. Goulas has performed more than 15,000 cataract surgeries. His goal has been to provide unparalleled surgical eye care in the Bluffton and Hilton Head area, with a particular emphasis on cataract surgery — combining careful examination, precise measurement, and current surgical technique to get consistently excellent results. He is also an expert in diagnosing and treating glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and many other ocular diseases.

Dr. Goulas is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the South Carolina Medical Association.

Born to immigrant parents from Greece, he is fluent in Greek. The only thing that tops his love for ophthalmology is his family — his wife Mari and his three daughters, Sofia, Anastasia (Tasi) and Filia (Lia).
